Jupp's involvement in film and tv began with the Dutch/American film of 'No Man's Valley' for which he designed the Characters.

This was followed by 'The Bluffers' another Dutch series shown on the UK's Channel 4. Jupp designed characters and art directed. Then came storyboards and character designs for the Dutch feature film 'Sebastian Star Bear'

Storyboarding and script writing in California for the Belgium (S.E.P..P) series 'SEABERT' was then followed by his very own project;

A TV spectacular!……

THE DREAMSTONE
1990 -1994
Martin Gates Productions
Central Television/Filmfair

The award winning British animated series introduced us to the Land of Dreams and nightmares…and to the Noops, Wuts and Urpneys that lived there! 'The Dreamstone' became itv (and Britain's ) most ambitious cartoon show. Four series of 52 half hour episodes ran for 4 years!

Based on Jupp's original stories, characters and design, ITV's flagship series regularly topped the B.A.R.B. charts

Produced and directed by Martin Gates, 'The Dreamstone' was brought to life by Animation Director Phil Robinson and John Stevenson (whose team succeeded in the daunting task of actually animating Jupp's idiot creations!)

Martin gates and Sue Radley assembled and directed the team of acting talent that provided the voices for the series. Including:

  • Stuart Lock
  • Nancy Hendry
  • John Franklyn-Robbins
  • Gary Martin
  • Melvyn Hayes
  • Richard Tate
  • Leonard Whiting
  • Shiela Steafel
  • Derek Wright
  • Anthony Jackson
  • Ellie Beaven.

Music was written, composed and conducted by Mike Batt with the London philharmonic orchestra . (available from, www.mikebatt.com )

Anoraks might like to know that the 5 minute 'Dreamstone' pilot directed in the USA by Mike Jupp, featured the voice of Christian Bale!

'Discovered' by Martin Gates, Bale was coached by him in his first feature film, Steven Spielberg's 'Empire of the Sun'

'The Dreamstone' was followed by another Jupp creation also produced and directed by Martin Gates productions,

'Bimble's bucket'
1996 1998
MARTIN GATES PRODUCTIONS

…a very silly story that Jupp 'adapted' from the 'Sword in the Stone' in this case it was a bucket stuck over a 'magician's' head instead of a sword and, instead of a stone, a swamp filled with pigs poo in which the magician was sinking.

The brave Bimble rescued the magician and was given the bucket as a reward!? The bucket, which turns out to be magic, gets stolen and shot full of holes by the bad guys.

Our hero Bimble is sent to find it! Yes!… it was indeed, 'The Search for the Holey Pail'!

This nonsense became 26 half hour episodes, again for ITV and again regularly achieving superb rating figures!

Music written composed and performed by Chris Caswell

The acting talents, again directed by Martin Gates included:

  • Julia Mackenzie
  • Ellie Beaven
  • Jonathan Kydd
  • Gary Martin
  • Lewis Macleod
  • Kate Robbins
